Have you ever wondered what a community garden looks like or how they serve the community? The Tacoma Garden Club supports many of these gardens in the area through our community grants. Come tour the Steilacoom Historical Community Garden with us on Friday, September 19th at 10:30. After the tour, join fellow members at the Topside Bar and Grill with a beautiful view of the sound for lunch.
Steilacoom Historical Community Garden features 30 raised beds of varying sizes, including some easy-to-reach, ADA height-compliant plots. It also has a natural native plants area managed by the Steilacoom Tribe and volunteers; an heirlooms-only Settlers’ Kitchen Garden, modeled on the historically accurate demonstration gardens at Fort Vancouver and the Fort Nisqually Museum site; an espaliered fruit tree grove, featuring heirloom fruit trees; and a gathering patio space for gardeners to rest and mingle.
The Steilacoom Historical Community Garden supports the We Love Steilacoom Association Food Pantry by encouraging their gardeners to donate a part of their harvest to help their neighbors experiencing food insecurity.
Carol Saynisch, Garden Coordinator will lead the tour.
